February - New Moon

This will be the New Moon on Thursday 27 February at 4.45 pm PST.

It will be aligned with the constellation Aquarius (sidereal astrology). This constellation, called Kumbha in Vedic astrology (which means ‘pot’), is represented by a man holding a pot and pouring out the nectar of knowledge and the water from the ocean of prana in which we bathe. Aquarius brings universal consciousness, beyond our little egos that have the illusion of being separate from the whole, and invites us to rethink the world we want to live in, to manifest new paradigms, to open up to community and collective consciousness, to unity with all that is.

In India, every year at the new moon in Aquarius, we celebrate the Mahashivaratri, the great festival of Shiva. This is said to be a very auspicious time to dive deep within ourselves. According to Vedic mythology, when the world was created, Shiva agreed to swallow poison (halahala) so that the world could exist. Shiva is that part of us that is capable of transforming all the poisons of existence (negative emotions, trauma, environmental poisons, etc.) and transcending them.

The new moon will take place in the lunar constellation (nakshtra) called Shatabhishak, which means ‘a hundred remedies’. This constellation is very favourable for all forms of therapy and healing, and for taking sacred plants and new remedies. The symbol of this constellation is a white circle, conducive to meditation and silence. We may feel more like being ‘in our own bubble’ during this New Moon period.

This year, the New Moon is accompanied by Saturn, which is very favourable to deep introspection. Saturn always leads us to face up to reality, even if that reality is difficult to see. It brings the austerity necessary for detachment and invites us to autonomy and independence at all levels. Saturn's proximity to the Sun and Moon can also bring fatigue, a lack of confidence, worries and pessimism.

We're heading for two eclipses, lunar on March 14 and solar on March 29, as well as the super conjunction of 7 planets in Pisces on March 29. Mercury has just entered and joins Venus, Neptune and Rahou who are already there. The planet of logic and reason is not very comfortable in this intuitive and emotional sign. With Venus exalted, it's the heart and creativity that take centre stage. Until April 7, this is not the best time to make important decisions, as we may lack discernment. With the energy of Pisces, we need to listen more to our feelings than to our reason.

Venus will go retrograde from March 1 to April 11, which may make relationships more complicated. This is the time to make adjustments, to return to our inner love, to assess our needs and the way we relate to others.
