July - Full Moon of Victory

It was the full moon this Sunday, July 21, at 3:17 a.m. PDT.

Natives call it the “thunder moon” and the “deer moon” because at this time of year, young deers have fully formed new antlers. The full moon will be aligned with the constellation Capricorn (sidereal astrology).

It could be a febrile full moon, with Mercury moving from a water sign to a fire sign (calling for the untying of karmic knots) and the Moon-Pluto conjunction bringing up deep, intense emotions that we might tend to repress, due to the nature of Capricorn.

The full Moon takes place in the lunar constellation (nakshatra) Uttarashada, the “star of the last victory”. It invites us not to give up until we've reached our goal! This constellation is ruled by the Vishvadevas, the “universal gods” of dharma, justice and truth, bringing the victory of truth over falsehood, of knowledge over ignorance, of life over death. This constellation is also linked to writing, as it is connected to Ganesha, who wrote the Vedas with his horn under the guidance of the great rishi Vyasa. So it's a good full moon for all our writing projects!

This full moon of the year marks Guru Purnima, which invites us to honor and express our gratitude to our masters, guides and teachers. It's also a time to take stock of our progress over the past year. The “Guru Tattwa” is also a principle, one that leads us from darkness to light, guiding and teaching us through our intuition and all the events and actors in our lives. It's a good time to renew our spiritual practice and open up to the divine energies pouring into the earth. Happy Guru Purnima!
